Western Downs renewables sector charging ahead with new solar farm approval
Western Downs Mayor Paul McVeigh said that one of the things his region offered was a skilled workforce, thanks to a concentration on energy projects in the last few years.

The Chinchilla Solar Farm site is located 140 km north west of Toowoomba in Queensland, Australia near the township of Chinchilla. The site is approximately 16 km north east of Chinchilla, on the existing 132 kV Tarong Chinchilla overhead transmission line.
The proposed Chinchilla Solar Farm will provide significant economic and environmental benefits, in addition to creating direct and indirect jobs and developing skills in a growing industry, and supporting small businesses. It also supports the Queensland Government in achieving 50 per cent of its energy from renewable resources by 2030, while further establishing regional Queensland as a leader in renewable energy.
The council has actively embraced the $4b worth of renewable energy projects calling Western Downs home, which includes the recently constructed Coopers Gap Wind Farm, the approved Dulacca Wind Farm and the newly approved Wambo Wind Farm. It meant the Western Downs could claim the title of Australia’s energy capital, he said.

The Western Downs Green Power Hub is a large solar farm project under construction.
At a size of 460 MW of installed solar panels once built, it will be Australia’s largest operating solar farm. The site also holds up to 150MW battery energy storage potential.
