Member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari said Queensland had one of the highest levels of solar system penetration in the world. The Urangan substation has been included in a large-scale, network-connected battery trial to support the uptake of renewable energy across Queensland.
The Ergon Energy substation is one of five sites chosen to examine the potential for battery storage to assist in gaining the maximum advantage from Queensland’s rooftop solar systems.
Energy Minister Mark McArdle has today opened Hervey Bay’s new $2.7 million, 401 kilowatt solar farm representing a significant milestone for the solar industry and the Fraser Coast.
Mr McArdle said the start of operations at the Hebblewhite Road Solar Farm in Hervey Bay marked the beginning of a renewable energy initiative that will generate savings for the Wide Bay Water Corporation and Fraser Coast ratepayers.
“This is the first time in Queensland a stand-alone solar farm has been integrated with a major commercial and industrial sector business,” Mr McArdle said.
“The use of the solar facility will help meet the farm’s maintenance and depreciation costs, and help offset the cost of Wide Bay Water’s operations.”
Mr McArdle said the farm also includes five kilowatts of demonstration solar panels as part of a research project being undertaken by Queensland solar company, Ingenero.
“Any savings the farm generates will flow through to Fraser Coast ratepayers,” he said.
Fraser Coast Community Solar Farm
The Fraser Coast Community Solar Farm is located on four hectares of the Hebblewhite Farm at Nikenbah.
It is made up of over 1,500 ground-mount solar panels, two inverters and a step-up transformer.
Electricity is generated at the site and fed back into the grid.
The average greenhouse gas emissions offset each year is approximately 554 tonnes of CO2-e. The Solar Farm produces 630 MWh per year.
Hebblewhite Farm comprises 120 hectares and was purchased by Wide Bay Water.
A 50-megalitre dam and 50-hectare native hardwood tree plantation have also been constructed on the site.
The Solar Farm was built with the support of the Queensland State Government.
